Common Garage Door Issues

Everyone likes having the convenience of a garage with a door that properly opens and closes. But when the
door is stuck, it becomes a big problem to fix. Nothing is worse than when it is storming outside and the garage
door won’t open. Find the problem, troubleshoot the issue, and obtain a quick solution so that the garage door
works again. Common garage door problems include bent rails, misaligned track, rollers, and worn springs. In
addition, broken cables, weather seal replacement, and damaged door panels are common problems. Another
problem involves the automatic garage door opener. Electric door openers can be temperamental with
problems like bad wiring and worn out motors. Moisture and extreme cold weather create problems with door
openers. The door opener remote control, or the transmitter, can have problems. If the transmitter batteries are
dead, the transmitter won’t open the door. The wall switch won’t work to open the door. Worse yet, the
transmitter may be operating on the same frequency as a neighbor’s garage door transmitter. Another problem,
the photo eye, aka the electronic eye or safety sensor, can become misaligned causing the garage door to jam.

Sometimes solving common garage door problems can be a simple fix. Other problems can involve a
complicated solution that requires the help of a garage door service company. For solving door opener
problems, check the garage door electric outlet to make sure the door opener is solidly plugged into the wall
outlet. Check the circuit breaker, the fuse, and the GFCI outlet to see if the circuit was tripped or burned out. Try
resetting the GFCI or the circuit breaker. If the circuit is constantly tripping, there may be a short circuit in the
electrical system. Check to see if the garage door opener motor has burned out.

If the wall switch is not the problem, then likely, the problem is with the door opener. If the door transmitter is
not working, check the batteries to see if they are dead. Replace the batteries to see if this solves the problem.  If that is not the problem, but the door opens when you are not touching the transmitter, check the transmitters
frequency. It is possible that a nearby neighbor is using the same frequency and opening the door. To solve the
issue, change the transmitter frequency to see if it solves the problem. If the door opener has a keypad, check
the programming to see if it needs to be reset. Also, check the door antenna on the motor unit to make sure it is
hanging down and is not damaged or obstructed. It can cause the door opener to malfunction. Try
reprogramming the remote control unit or the keypad. Check the remote control manual for troubleshooting
solutions. If all DIY quick fix attempts fail and the door still does not work, the door opener may need to be
replaced. For serious garage door problems, seek the help of a professional and consult a garage door service
